The Improved Liveability Design Category

We often get questions from NDIS Participants and their supports about the differences between each design and funding category that they may be eligible for. We think it’s vital to have an understanding of these categories so that you, or your loved ones, can ensure that you are living in a home that is accessible to your needs and, most importantly, comfortable.

In this series of blogs we will go through all four SDA designs in full, highlighting key specifications and features that inherent to each of them. Up first…Improved Liveability:

Improved Liveability housing has been designed to improve ‘Liveability’ by incorporating a reasonable level of physical access and enhanced provisions for people with sensory, intellectual, or cognitive impairment. What this means is that your Improved Liveability home will be built and modified in such a way to ensure that you can navigate throughout the home without visual or sensory barriers that otherwise may cause harm, discomfort, or anxiety.

So What Features Stick Out?

One of the key features in an Everhomes property that would greatly benefit a tenants with Improved Liveability funding is something called Luminance Contrasts’. Technically speaking, luminance contrast is the light reflected from one surface or component, compared to the light reflected from another surface or component. For people with visual impairment in normal housing, their eyes may not be able to pick up on the differences between these reflections and what they look at may blend into one, especially when navigating through doorways and hallways.

Have a Look at This Example From One of Our Everhomes Properties - Note the Contrast Between the Ceiling/Walls and the Door Frame:

By having a internal finishes with the appropriate levels of luminance contrast, individuals with visual impairment will be able to navigate easily throughout their home environment and surrounding areas. Being able to identify doorways and internal hallways effectively ensures that there is a reduced risk of injury, anxiety, and frustration in your own home.

There are so many other features in an Improved Liveability home that we could end up writing an entire essay of the benefits of their inclusion - but we think it’s best to see them for yourself! if you would like to have a look at one of our Improved Liveability houses to see if it would suit your needs, get in contact and we can book you an inspection.
